Looks like 3G is on the Edge..

News was in from the beginning of the year that by the end of 2008 PTA will auction licenses for 3G. With the year coming to the end, we have not seen this happen. But now with a two-day workshop on 3G (UMTS/WCDMA) Network Planning, it looks like PTA has laid the foundation for licensing the 3G spectrum early next year.

The workshop was held in association with Qualcomm Inc, USA and Central Asian CDMA Forum at PTA headquarters, Islamabad from 4-5 December 2008.

WiMAX continues to evolve in Pakistan

WiMAX in Pakistan emerged commercially with the launch of Wateen in August 2007. Recently, Mobilink has come up with its WiMAX brand ‘Infinity” and now it looks like the competition will soon elevate with Wi-tribe and TeleCard entering the WiMAX service race in Pakistan, the only country in the world having a nationwide commercial deployment of WiMAX services.

Wi-tribe is a joint venture of Qatar Telecom (Qtel) and A.A. Turki Corporation for Trading and Contracting (ATCO) in partnership with Clearwire. Wi-tribe is already offering services in Jordan and in Pakistan it has emerged out of the acquisition of majority stake in Burraq Telecom that occurred more than a year ago. They plan to showcase the real world benefits of Wireless Broadband to Internet community in Pakistan. (more…)

Nokia ‘Achieve’ – Taking on the iPhone

Nokia has unveiled plans (by releasing short videos) for a dual touch screen concept phone which may really give the Apple iPhone some tough competition.

The phone opens some what like the old Nokia communicator but does not have a keypad. Instead, both top and bottom screens are ‘touch’…

This is what Nokia states an example of what the new concept would ‘Achieve’:

Members of an architectural firm work feverishly together to win a competitive new project. Virtual teamwork is made effortless through smart wireless conferencing and remote presentations. Bluetooth audio ensures strong and clear communication. When mobile technology ascends to this level, we will achieve great things together.

Telecom round-up: PTCL, Mobilink and Worldcall

It’s raging on, the broadband evolution in Pakistan, especially wireless. With Wateen launching the world’s first country-wide deployment of WiMAX last year, an upcoming WiMAX boom was strongly felt in Pakistan.

And here we are, with Mobilink in line with their wireless broadband offering based on WiMAX. Also, PTCL’s smart tv has been launched this August. I will also be giving you a sneak into the soft-launch of WorldCall’s EVDO.
