Urdu on the Web: Google Indic Transliteration

I have held the view that we need to promote Urdu computing and Urdu on the internet with extensive research and development and practical implementation with more and more content put online that is localised and based on Urdu. Here is Google Labs with a fantastic service called “Indic Transliteration“.
Google Indic Transliteration offers an option for converting Roman characters to the Urdu characters. This lets you type Urdu words phonetically in English script and still have them appear in their correct alphabet. Note that this is not the same as translation — it is the sound of the words that are converted from one alphabet to the other, not their meaning.
For example, typing “shukriya” transliterates into Urdu as:

Developers must have heard about ‘OpenSocial’, here’s something based on it. Google FriendConnect. I remember applying for it a couple of months back and received their email a few days ago that I have been ‘Whitelisted’ for the Google FriendConnect service.
Very simply put, their website describes the service like:
With Google Friend Connect, visitors to your site or blog can:
- Sign in with their Google, Yahoo, AIM or OpenID account.
- Interact with other visitors by making friends, sharing media, posting comments, playing games, and more.
- Invite friends from other social networks and contact lists to join your site or blog.
So, on the right you can see what I’ve named ‘THE LOUNGE’. You can now become a member of this website with your Google, Yahoo, AIMS or OpenID accounts. I think this is pretty cool…
I’ll keep adding the other applications available based on the Google FriendConnect from time to time. So you can expect things like a wall or a webpage review system being added to this website.
