Report: Humanitarian Crisis in Pakistan
May 22nd
I’ve compiled a report on the humanitarian crisis that Pakistan faces today. The report has been published at “Global Voices Online“, a community of more than 200 bloggers around the world who work together to bring you translations and reports from blogs and citizen media everywhere, with emphasis on voices that are not ordinarily heard in international mainstream media.
The report highlights how the Pakistani Blogosphere has reacted to the crisis and gives you an in-sight to cyber activism in Pakistan.
Pakistan has been hit by a severe humanitarian crisis as a result of the military onslaught against the Taliban insurgency. The valley of Swat is in Pakistan’s Malakand division, a beautiful valley often dubbed as another heaven on planet earth. It used to be a prominent tourist resort before it was struck by militancy and extremism of the local Taliban.
It is being reported that over one million (some reports even suggest that figure stands at near 2 million) people have fled their homes from various areas in the Malakand division and FATA including Buner, Dir and Swat. These “Internally Displaced People” (IDPs) are seeking refuge in other areas of Pakistan. Temporary camps have been established in the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) where registered IDPs are provided food and shelter.
The crisis is huge. The problems seem impossible to overcome. But Pakistan as a nation has always proved its resilience and unity in testing times. In this regard, a massive relief effort has been launched by many organizations and individuals. The Pakistani Blogosphere is also taking a leading role to provide relief to our Pakistani brothers and sisters in distress.

A sigh of relief for the Pakistani nation at last! The Pakistan air force decided to send in its jets to fly over North Waziristan to keep a check on Pakistan’s air space violations by the United States, which is being seen as a very strong signal internationally.
A US spy plane had entered Pakistani air space but disappeared soon after the emergence of PAF fighter jets.
Locals of FATA have expressed a sigh of relief and satisfaction over the PAF flights.
The United States had publicly announced in recent days that it will carry out attacks in Pakistani territory and will only inform the Pakistani government. The United States categorically said that it will not ask for Pakistan’s permission, which invited a strong statement from the Chief of Pakistani armed forces, General Ashfaq Pervez Kiyani. More >
Wake up, we are already at War!

The number of missile attacks by pilot less Predator drones in Pakistan has more than tripled in the past year. Pakistani officials reported 11 such strikes this year, compared to three strikes in 2007. The strikes continue, and all we get is a grin from the President, or a statement such as “This is a war which is against Pakistan. And we’ll fight for our own past. And that is because I have lost my own leader, Benazir Bhutto, because of the militants” from the Prime Minister. Wake up, we are already at War!

With the resignation of President Musharraf who had gained himself a notorious image in Washington for his tough stance on the Pakistani Nuclear program and the functioning of the ISI, Pakistan has effectively been left leaderless. There is political vacuum in the air and the nation anxiously waits for what comes next.
Let us analyze why it happened all so quickly and what the nation should brace itself for. More >
