The Kerry Lugar Bill has been Signed
13
Democracy is for people’s rights and freedom of expression. Democracy is about protecting national interests in light of the aspirations of the people. And in total disrespect of the will of the people of Pakistan, the American President has formally signed the Kerry-Lugar Bill and it now stands as ‘law’. In total defiance of the Pakistani reaction, the President has not even included what is called a ‘signing statement’ to the bill.
The debate in the National Assembly of Pakistan had not even been completed when Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi hurriedly flew back to Washington to find a settlement to the issue. It now seems that he only flew back to avoid facing severe criticism back home as his visit resulted in nothing but an ‘explanatory statement’ which, according to MNA Ms. Marvi Memon, further stresses upon the very objectionable clauses on ‘Regional cooperation’ and on Pakistan’s nuclear profile. Saudi’s will let Israel bomb Iran
15
The Daily Express of the United Kingdom carries a report dated September 2007 claiming that the Saudi’s will allow Israel to fly over Saudi Arabia to bomb Iranian Nuclear installations.
Not surprisingly, the Western media and Israeli officials had explicitly said that a few Arab countries supported Israel in the Israel-Hezbollah stand-off of 2006 to have the Hezbollah and its influence in the Muslim world eliminated once and for all. That, however, was not to be the case as history witnessed a small force outsmart and bash one of the strongest and advanced armies of the world. (more…)
Standing up to the challenge
2It is important for us, as Pakistani’s, to really stand up to the threat we face and address the ‘Creeping American Occupation‘ that I referred to in my previous post. For this, we can and we should take inspiration from the stand the Islamic Republic in our neighborhood has taken up for the past 30 years.
We stand today – many say – as the 5th largest army of the world. A nuclear armed country with a nation willing to sacrifice every drop of its blood in the name of sovereignty and religion. (more…)
Creeping American Occupation
14
What we all used to warn of probably a year back is now actually happening. Pakistan’s sovereignty is no longer guaranteed. I will not hesitate to say that our sovereignty has been sold out for a few billion dollars of the IMF and to the so called ‘Friends of Pakistan’ (read: USA) who are yet to provide any substantial monetary assistance.
No Pakistani would ever want any single inch of our homeland to be given away to outsiders, and especially if the outsiders are American. In allowing the Americans to violate our airspace, in granting them land for an unnecessary expansion of the US embassy in Islamabad, in allowing Blackwater operatives to run freely in urban areas in Peshawar, Islamabad and Karachi – the so called democratic and elected government of Pakistan is involved in gross misconduct, a misadventure that is evidently making Pakistan BLEED! It is a massive violation of the people’s mandate and the votes that were bagged in the name of ‘Revenge‘.
Mobile banking and Telecom companies a challenge to the banking industry
13
Mobile commerce, mobile payments, cell phone based financial transactions (or whatever you would like to call them) have been discussed and debated all over the world over the past few years. Basic m-commerce applications have been introduced already in several countries, including Pakistan.
It is widely anticipated that telecom operators and vendors pose a serious challenge to the banking industry as they take electronic banking or e-banking mobile.
Speaking of statistics, a total of 1.6 billion bank accounts exist worldwide. Compare this to 4 billion cell phone users. Speaking of Pakistan, the banking industry is host to close to 20 million bank accounts as compared to over 90 million cell phone subscribers. Telecom operators and vendors have good enough statistical evidence to believe they already have a head start! (more…)
