The Game as it Unfolds
4
No, this is not me talking about politics. This is me, the entrepreneur, writing these lines. And the internet is the game I’m talking about. The internet has undergone a radical shift over the past couple of years, it has transformed from an “internet of hyperlinks and search engines” to an “internet of PEOPLE”.
The focus – PEOPLE. We recently rolled out one of our projects for public consumption, discussed in an introductory post here, that allows broadband users to search and improve their buying decisions. Again, the focus was on people.
My idea of a perfect internet is where people advise people – where you can connect with friends and family and take their advise on things – see what they have done, how they have addressed the same need in a matter of minutes.
The game will change, as we introduce people-to-people internet connectivity in applications and web portals in the coming days. This, for me, is a personal priority as part of my vision – how I see the use of internet evolving in Pakistan. No big plans yet, there is plenty of opportunity within our borders.
Broadband Price Comparison in Pakistan
4
Okay, I won’t sound like I am doing a review here. We, me and Sibtain, put our heads together to do something in what we believed existed a lot of potential – a Broadband Price Comparison website for the Pakistan market. So it is a little start-up of ours that we expect will serve a gap called SmartChoice.Pk – helping people make informed buying decisions.
We are offering the followings tools and services for consumers:
- Broadband Package details from all Broadband Providers in Pakistan
- Broadband guide, helping people understand how Broadband connections are sold and how they should ideally be making their choices
- Internet Speed Test Tool, to let them know where they stand right now
- Broadband Provider reviews from users
- Custom User Dashboard to manage your reviews and saved packages
- Broadband blog
The idea? Help them make informed decisions in high-involvement purchasing (which includes Broadband).
The Business Model? Well, not everything can be made public but it is more like earning on broadband referrals and advertising.
The portal offers broadband providers the right audience for online advertising and targeting precisely those looking to either switch their current provider and also for new buyers.
We believe that this initiative will help the overall broadband industry grow with our focus on spreading knowledge and the advantages of broadband – it is not that expensive any more in our country.
So whatever segment you find yourself in, a consumer or a provider, please feel free to navigate yourself – right away – to SmartChoice.Pk!
Research projects for the progress of our nation
3
For the past eight or nine years, Pakistan has been producing a large number of engineers and technologists, the numbers literally run in several thousands. This is all thanks to strong initiatives taken by the previous government through the Higher Education Commission and the Pakistan Engineering Council.
For engineering and technology graduates, their final year project is one of the most important aspects of not only their study but also is an asset to the nation. Unfortunately, only a handful of projects stand out every year that truly contribute to the nation’s well being and prosperity in terms of technology and its localized applications.
Most graduates treat their Final year projects as a formality. In many cases I have found students paying outsiders to have their projects developed and just present them to their professors and come out with a qualified degree. With regret, I have to say such students are not only doing injustice to themselves, this is injustice to the nation as well. A nation who has invested in you and expects a lot from you. (more…)

FTTH Services in Pakistan
3Originally written for Telecomistan.com – It is understood that Optical fiber will be the main building block for future high capacity home broadband networks due to the fact that its transmission capacity is almost unlimited compared to existing copper cabling systems.
Fiber to the Home (FTTH) networks, where the optical fibers run directly into the customers’ home, are enjoying considerable growth in many parts of the world. This is mainly due to the steep rise in demand by private households for greater network bandwidths so as to use novel applications such as fast Internet access or high-definition television.
Services such as Voice communication, broadband internet facility and IPTv are generally offered by an FTTH provider over a single line.
FTTH in Pakistan:
When it comes to the deployment of Optical Fiber networks in Pakistan, we have four major commercial long-haul optical fiber networks in PTCL, Wateen Telecom, Multinet and Mobilink spread across the length and breadth of Pakistan. Wateen and PTCL have also invested in metro ring networks for large cities.
