Exit Strategy? Zardari may resign due to ill-health
6
When I heard Zardari had flown out of the country in an air-ambulance to Dubai in a rush, I decided to call a friend close to the political big-wigs in Islamabad. I was told that the President’s “Pace-Maker” had developed problems and that his situation was indeed “critical”.
I was also informed that his children, those who weren’t in UAE, were also asked to reach the country.
That said, our media is abuzz with rumour that the President may resign on ill-health grounds, which is a perfect exit-strategy for a scandal-hit President who has weathered out extreme pressures over the past 4 years but this time, it all seems to be melting down for him as charges of treason are thrown at him.
Some quarters believe the President will not return to Pakistan after calls for a joint-session of parliament on the memo-gate issue were shunned by opposition parties and the military leadership.
He may be genuinely ill, however, let us all pray for the safety and well being of Pakistan.
Shah Mehmood Qureshi joining the PTI?
3
Following Imran Khan’s huge public gathering at the Minar-e-Pakistan in Lahore, political temperature in the country has been on a constant rise. Shah Mehmood Qureshi, following his resignation/removal from the post of Foreign Minister by the sitting PPP government has been extremely vocal against the sitting government, which he was part of until recently.
News has been making the rounds that me might either join the PML-N or Imran Khan’s PTI.
The Express Tribune is reporting that Shah Mehmood Qureshi has taken his decision and will be formally announcing his affiliation with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in a rally this November 27.
The Newspaper has quoted a spokesperson of the PTI in this regard:
A spokesperson for the PTI said that Qureshi had met PTI Chairman Imran Khan before Eidul Azha and is expected to join the party soon.
Shah Mehmood Qureshi will be resigning from his National Assembly seat before he makes the official announcement. In recent days, several prominent names have been announcing their joining of the PTI including the grandson of Allama Muhammad Iqbal.
Winds of change are blowing harder as Pakistan braces itself for political activity that has probably NEVER been witnessed before. Will Imran Khan and his flock be able to handle the pressure?
Only time will tell.

Parachinar does not need a War against Terror?
6I have written on this topic occasionally for over 2 years now on my blog here. I also raised this issue in a piece I did for the Global Voices Online and how the situation had actually turned into a humanitarian crisis.
It appears as if the War on Terror is spread around the whole world except for this forsaken heaven on earth, Parachinar, where the Taliban have been brutally killing the local Shi’ite population.
Recently, children orphaned by the Taliban Holocaust, staged a demonstration in front of the National Press Club in Islamabad. They said they had come out to ask for justice because the government and authorities paid no heed to what their elders had been saying, demanding and peacefully demonstrating in front of the National Assembly in Islamabad and other places.
They asked the authorities What their fault is and why all routes that lead to their homes are under Taliban control. Is this really how helpless the Pakistan government is against Taliban insurgency? (more…)
Pakistan Power Crisis: Shortfall touches 7200 MW
4
I have discussed the energy and power crisis in Pakistan repeatedly on this blog. I admit I have been away from the subject and this blog for quite some time for which I must apologize to all my readers. Long story short, the power crisis stands much steeper and deeper than what it was before. On January 23 – 2009, I shared an article posted by someone at the CSS Forums. The debate and comments shared by our audience are a worthwhile read before we proceed with where the current situation stands.
The Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO) yesterday admitted Pakistan was facing a shortfall of almost 7200 MW, unparalleled in our history. They blame the Pakistan State Oil (PSO) for delay in oil imports which has resulted in this massive crisis. Load shedding is at its peak across major cities in Pakistan.
The shortfalls, by power generating units, are listed as follows: (more…)
KESC dismisses over 4000 employees, protests follow
1In a stunning development, the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation has fired over 4000 of its employees. The company claims the fired employees were offered a “voluntary separation” scheme which about 375 people availed and left their jobs by January 1, 2011.
Strong and violent protests have followed, especially since this morning where the sacked employees have resorted to pelting stones at the KESC building and have also put some cars on fire.
The KESC has decided to focus on “core” departments and has decided to “outsource” all unnecessary and non-technical functions of the company which has resulted in this massive sacking of its employees. The employees will be given one-month’s salary as a compensation only.
In a crippled economy, firing of so many people does not send a very good signal for the government in power as the number of people protesting is huge and is likely to grow if the situation is not controlled.
Calling for a Tunisia like situation?? The government must be scared, and it has every reason to be.
