Habib Jalib and the people
Mar 22nd
This post about renowned poet and activist, Habib Jalib, is mostly from Wikipedia. As stated on the website, he was a Marxist-Leninist and aspired to the ideals of Communism. He was a member of the Communist Party of Pakistan; later when the Communist Party was banned and started working under the banner of the National Awami Party, Jalib joined the NAP. He expressed his beliefs openly and paid heavily for them. Habib Jalib spent most of his life in Jail and the rest on the streets.
Due to his daring revolt against the order of the day (in Ayub’s era), Jalib was banned from official media but he remained undeterred. He rather started a tirade against the tyranny with more resolution. It reached its zenith when Fatima Jinnah decided to contest elections against Ayub Khan. All democratic forces rallied around her and at her election meetings, Jalib used to recite his fiery poems in front of an emotionally-charged crowd. His most popular poem at that time was:
Maan kay paon talay jannat hai idhar aa jao
(The paradise is under the feet of the mother. So come into her fold).
And here I am, sharing a beautiful recitation of one of his famous write-ups: “Main ne Uss se Ye Kaha”
Where to from here?

I admit I have been silent (at least on my blog) about all the Long March/judge re-instatement drama for quite a long time now. The situation now is that we have Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry reinstated as the Chief Justice of Pakistan and the lawyers movement has been widely celebrated as successful.
But where are we headed towards now? Will the judiciary be really free and independent? Will it be free of corruption? I seriously doubt that! There is, however, no doubt in my mind that President Zardari is weaker as a President than he was before. Efforts to publicize the judges reinstatement as a PPP victory have almost failed to impress the general public.
Pakistan was headed for a major disaster had the Chief Justice not been restored. The dangerous Punjab-Sindh politics could have taken us anywhere in the wilderness. The Army’s timely intervention and cautious handling of the situation surely deserves appreciation and respect.
Another key observation that I have to share is the fact that the Sharif brothers are yet to receive anything for themselves out of this drama. The judiciary issue now stands resolved while they stand ineligible to contest elections. The only source of comfort for them is the verbal commitment from the government that the issue will be taken up again in the Supreme court and a review petition shall be filed. For now, following is the news on the issue:
Govt to seek suspension of SC order against Sharifs
ISLAMABAD, March 21: The federal government is again approaching the Supreme Court, this time to seek suspension of its Feb 25 order disqualifying the Sharif brothers from electoral politics until review petitions already filed against their ineligibility are decided.
“On the instructions of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani we are moving an application before the Supreme Court with a request to suspend the operation of its decision of disqualifying the Sharif brothers,” Deputy Attorney General Agha Tariq Mehmud told Dawn.
Are you telling me the reinstated judges and the Supreme court led by them will review a court ruling and let the convicted Sharif’s contest elections? Yeah! Anything is possible in Pakistan anyway!
What I would like to see is the NRO (National Reconciliation Ordinance) challenged and taken up by the Supreme Court. I would like to see it thrown out. I would like to see the Sharif’s told that “Sorry, You are Ineligible and cannot contest elections”.
Democracy is not meant for Pakistan. We do not have democracy in Pakistan. We are better off with dictators. But I’d say more on this some other time.
My questions remains. Where to from here?

Holocaust of Shias in Parachinar
Mar 7th
This was the title of a seminar recently held in the Iranian city of ‘Qom’, “Holocaust of Shias in Parachinar”. We all have been receiving pictures of beheaded bodies and acts of barbarianism from both Sunni and Shia friends. We all know that dozens of people are violently subjugated to sectarian hatred everyday in this once beautiful tribal area of Pakistan, Parachinar.
The following is a news report by an Iranian news agency on the seminar and how Tehran has raised the issue at the highest level with the Pakistani authority.
Media blackout on Parachinar Shia killings
Leading Pakistani scholars strongly condemn the ‘western media censor-policy’ over the Shia Muslim killings in the northwestern city of Parachinar.
Political experts and religious scholars, attending a summit in the Iranian city of Qom, emphasized on the necessity to launch a regional media campaign to raise global awareness about the issue.
The summit held in Iranian city of Qom under the banner “Holocaust of Shias in Parachinar,” came in the wake of the killings of hundreds of Shia community-members over the past six months in Parachinar and Hangu.
Pro-Taliban and al-Qaeda-linked militants, who are reportedly behind the killings, have imposed an economic blockade against the Shia-dominated population areas.
The frequent incidents have raised concerns among human rights group, while moderate Pakistani Sunni groups have described the issue as a conspiracy against the country.
Taliban leaders, who were toppled in the 2001 US-led invasion of Afghanistan, took refuge to tribal regions in Pakistan and rapidly began to extend heir influence from tribes to major towns and cities.
The pro-Taliban anti-Shia groups have launched a violent campaign against the Shia Muslims, and are stretching the campaign toward the restive southwestern Pakistan as well.
Quetta, the capital of Pakistan’s restive southwestern Balochistan province has witnessed several instances of violence directed against the Hazara Shia community in recent months.
Several Shia religious gatherings have also been targeted in central province of Punjab over the past some months.
Tehran has repeatedly cautioned Islamabad over the ‘silent massacre’ of its Shia community by the Taliban in the country. “The incidents that have occurred against Pakistan’s Shia community are a plot to create conflict between the region’s Sunni and Shia population,” said Iran’s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani.
“We have warned Islamabad over the incidents and we will follow up on the matter,” he added.
Shia sources say they make up one-third of Pakistan’s population of nearly 160 million. Since the 1980s, thousands of people have been killed in sectarian-related incidents in Pakistan.
What I fail to understand is that the locals have been demanding the government to send in the army to Parachinar as opposed to areas where the locals have stood up by saying that they we will deal with the militants ourselves and the army need not intervene.
What I also fail to understand is that the media is absolutely silent on this issue of enormous importance. Where is the justice we talk about? Where are the voices who stand up for human rights? Or are they busy organizing concerts and fashion shows?

So who are bloggers anyway?
Mar 7th
Yeah, tough guy! This blog post is an attempt to tell you, ‘all of you‘, in the simplest possible terms about what blogging is and who bloggers are. You see, blogging needs a lot of time – farigh (free) time – and bloggers are amongst those absolutely ‘farigh‘ people you would come across. We are people who have nothing else in the world to do but ramble on our blogs about stuff YOU are most probably not interested in…
I disagree. This is what you think about blogging and bloggers. Blogging is a medium of expression, a very powerful one. And bloggers are people who have the guts to express themselves in public – with (in most cases) no reservations at all. You can also describe bloggers as people who utilize their free time to earn a few extra bucks, whatever amount it may be.
Me and my blogger friends are open to answering questions and listening to your opinion.
And this little post ends here. Have a nice day!
