Salam Pakistan! Salam to the youth who rose, who had the courage to rise against tyranny! Today, the 7th of November 2007 witnessed hundreds of students of FAST-NU (Lahore) and LUMS rise against the imposition of emergency in Pakistan.

Lums Gate sealed by police

Students from FAST-NU (Lahore) protested peacefully outside their campus, holding placards and chanting slogans against the government and the President. Interestingly, it is reported that five (5) senior professors and faculty members were part of the protest. Students chanted ‘Go Musharraf Go’ and ‘Laathi goli nahi chalay gi’ (Rule of Batons and bullets will not be allowed) slogans.

Police vans, four of them, arrived soon at the scene and the policemen got off to baton charge the protesting students. The same happened at LUMS. The policy followed by the students at both universities was similar – when they saw the police approaching, they moved inside the campus and the gates were closed by the police later. Students holed up inside.

It is learnt that 4 students of FAST-NU Lahore were arrested and later released. The police and the university administration held long discussions with the police demanding the administration to hand over the students holding placards to the police.

The enlightened, moderate people of Pakistan salute the FAST-NU Lahore and LUMS administration for supporting their students and not giving in to the police demand.

It is learnt that a better, more powerful protest would be organized on Friday, 9th November 2007.

What is important to note that these protests have started off from un-orthodox places in Pakistan. The government would surely never have imagined protests to start from highly reputed universities like LUMS and FAST-NU. This indicates the frustration and anguish of the learned, knowledgeable and enlightened class of the society. This particular class of people seldom speak in state affairs, but when they do, they can shake anyone’s ground! Why? Because they are learned, they have knowledge and speak LOGIC!

This is the spark that the nation needed, provided by the youth of Lahore!

Salam Nau-jawan! Salam Qaum-e-Pakistan!
